Report: Soodh
Chief Executive Officer of DhiFM radio Ibrahim Khaleel has said that he has received unofficial reports that the state-owned Voice of Maldives was trying to sue DhiFM for broadcasting Siyarath - Biography of Prophet Muhammad.
The program is popular among Maldivians during the holy month of Ramazan. Mr. Khaleel said that he heard of the news that VoM has requested the Ministry of Information to take action against DhiFM for broadcasting the program without getting the permission.
However, Voice of Maldives denied any such attempts. Director General Badhurun Naseer said that they have not filed a case against DhiFM. He said that a letter has been sent to Ministry of Information informing that Siyarath was recorded by VoM and has long been using it and remains as a property of VoM. Therefore, the letter was sent to inform about it and to make sure that VoM gets Intellectual Property Rights over the program.
Mr. Khaleel said that there are no intellectual property laws in the country that could prevent the use of the program. He also said that it was broadcasted on the request of many of the customers.
He said that DhiFM has already received Quran translation and Siyarath from one of their partnership company and that it would be in place, even if the authorities stop them broadcasting the program in the future.
