President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom yesterday said that the biggest challenge faced by Maldives is ensuring a safe and satisfying environment while enjoying the modern development and good living standards. The President made this statement in his message on the occasion of World Maritime Day.

Outlining the theme for this year’s World Maritime Day, “IMO’s response to current environmental challenges”, the President highlighted that human activity has led to increasing depletion of natural resources.

In his message the President also noted that the Maldives is geographically located on a route used for transportation of liquid fuel, and called on the people to be vigilant about the potential devastating results of accidents faced by vessels transporting liquid fuel through our seas.

President also stressed the importance of our national responsibility to strengthen the safety and security of our seas.
