A high ranking official of Male’ Municipality has stated that Building Code currently in practice does not require an Environment Impact Assessment report, EIA, for every building that is to be constructed in Male’.
Official from Male’ Municipality made the statement while answering a question from Velidhoo News, regarding the construction of 15 storey Holiday Inn at Henveiru Athireege. Velidhoo News has received information that neighbors of Athireege have filed complaints with government authorities as the sheet piling work is causing the nearby building to viberate. He noted that various people have made several complaints regarding the matter but the regulations governing the construction of such buildings does not specify to access the impact of such happenings. He further noted that this regulation was made in consultation with Ministry of Public Works and Ministry of Urban Development.
Ahmed Rasheed owner Athireeveli, neighbor of Athireege said that due sheet piling work, his house as well other house nearby experience vibrations. He further said that according to information he has received sheet piling work will continue for three more months and he expressed his concern on the condition his house would be on the completion of the Holiday Inn. He also said walls of his house have cracks and that he has filed complaints with the concerned government authority and so far he has not received any response.
Velidhoo News Team visited Athireeveli and found that this house which is not more than 2 years old already have cracks on the walls. The Team also visited Dharumavantha School. An official from the school said that when the construction work is in progress they are very afraid as whole building shakes and looks as if it might collapse on their heads. He also noted during that they are unable to use any computers as well. He further said that he has made complaints to Education Ministry regarding the issue.
Speaking to Velidhoo News, Ahmed Najeeb ,Manager of Male’ Hotel Association Private Limited who is contractor of Holiday Inn, said that even though an EIA report is not required before commencement of the work, he would continue the constructions as per instructions he receives from concerned authorities.
