16 September 2007
Report: Soodh

Drafting of the country’s new Constitution will be completed within the next five days according to the chair of the Constitution Drafting Committee in the Special Majlis Ibrahim Ismail (Ibraa).

Nine chapters have already been distributed among Special Majlis members and many amendments are expected when it is submitted for debate. Ibraa said that at the present pace the drafting will be finished by end of this week.

He said that two meetings of the drafting committee are being held during the month of Ramazan. He also said that presently they are working on the chapter on People’s Majlis (Parliament).

Lack of quorum at the draft committee meetings led to the Speaker of the Special Majlis to request the members to give special attention to complete the work. Ibraa said that the committee members are fully cooperative and that he hopes to complete the work soon.

Members of the Special Majlis have also expressed the satisfaction on the progress of drafting committee, thought they remain skeptical over meeting the November 30 deadline.
