A president who has completed full two-terms will not be able to run-for presidential elections, according to the drafting committee members. During the meeting held yesterday, members amended the chapter on President, in which it states that a presidential term would be five years.

Any winning president can complete two full terms. They can run for continue terms either consecutively, or with intermittent two terms.

In the amendment to article (b), which explains the terms, members said that any candidate who have completed two terms would not be able to run for office.

If the Majlis approves the chapter with these amendments, then former president Mr. Ibrahim Nasir and current President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom may not be able to run for office in the next presidential election.

Members say that the idea is to limit the number of terms and it would be debated in the Majlis before finalizing.

President Gayoom is now serving his sixth term of office and proposed a reform agenda on 9 June 2004 including amending the present constitution which was already amended in 1998 under his initiative.

In a DRP meeting, President Gayoom has announced that he would be running for next year’s presidential election which would be the first multi-party elections to be held in the country.
