People's Special Majlis will meet on Monday night to take a decision about the non submission of the report on the referendum on the system of government which was entrusted to the 11 Member Committee. Special Majlis has entrusted the Committee to oversee the referendum and submit a report to the Majlis within 15 days. However, the committee was unable to hold a meeting due to required quorum not being present at any of its meetings held for this purpose.
Rules of Procedure of the Majlis provides under its clause 32 to submit such matters to the Majlis and Majlis to make a decision.
The meeting on Monday night will inform the Majlis official results of the referendum as communicated by the Commissioner of Elections. The referendum on 18 August has given a landslide 62 percent majority for presidential system which was supported by ruling Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party, DRP. Parliamentary system supported by opposition MDP received 38 percent of votes. MDP has said the vote was fraudulent and has rejected the result.
Earlier, Special Majlis has arranged to hold the meeting on Sunday night, but the Majlis has later informed the meeting will be held on Monday night as the scheduled special meeting to revive the spirit of Ramazan was to be held on Sunday night.
