Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP has called upon authorities to conduct a fair and transparent investigation on the expenses which the Commissioner of Elections has spent during the August 18 referendum.

In a statement, MDP has said that during the party’s election to elect a president on 2 June 2007, they have spent Rufiyaa 344,000, which is nearly Rufiyaa 3215 per ballot box.

However, the expenses the Elections Office has spent for the referendum shows that it reached Rufiyaa 28 million, which is nearly Rufiyaa 65,574 per ballot box.

The party accused the Commissioner of Elections Office spending the money wastefully and therefore, called for an investigation why the expenses were too high, according to their views.

It also said that during a time the prices of goods in the market is high, such expenses should be reduced and minimized and therefore, it is important to know why such a huge amount was spent.

MDP had also said that the expenses related to referendum would be exceeding Rufiyaa 28 million, which may be just direct cost.
