Report: Soodh
Maldivian Democratic Party spokeswoman Maariya Ahmed Didi has questioned the ability of Islamic Democratic Party leader Umar Naseer to win next year’s presidential election. She said there is no way that Umar Naseer wining the election.
Following the IDP policy that Umar has recently announced saying that if he wins the election, he would construct 4000 housing flats to alleviate housing problems in Male’, Maariya said that it would be an impossible task. She said that at a time IMF and World Bank is issuing warnings on the economic changes within the country; no political party could make such promises of popular policies.
Umar is talking like that perhaps he is so confident that he is not going to win the election, said Maariya. She also said that no one knows much about IDP and they don’t have a status as a political party. She said that IDP has not played a crucial role in the reform process and announcing that capital punishment would be given to drug traffickers and providing housing seems to be unrealistic.
She also said that all such policy announcements were made without foreseeing the consequences, as it could not be implemented unless the constitution permits.
Umar has earlier said that he would levy tax on businesses to fund the construction of flats and would be providing housing flats to other populous islands in the country, in addition to Male’.
Adhaalath Party also criticized Umar’s announcement to build flats by saying that even if IDP wins, there is no way that they could implement it, unless approved by the parliament.
