Report: Amindi

Member of Parliament representing Addu Atoll Ibrahim Shareef (Mavoataa) has said that the deadline for drafting of the new constitution will elapse and that it would not be completed on time.

Asked if the constitution will be completed by deadline, Mr. Shareef said that the government is trying to accomplish the target. However, he said that he fears with the factions in the Majlis that it may not be done, as anticipated.

He said that he hopes that the constitution is finalized by March or April next year. He said that some of the members are not taking responsibility and are delaying the process.

Shareef was earlier a member of the opposition MDP before joining ruling DRP. He said that the presidential elections of 2008 should begin with the new constitution.

Government has said on numerous occasions that the country would have its first multi-party elections in the next presidential elections.

Last week, Chair of the Constitution Drafting Committee in the Special Majlis Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) said they were making headway in finalizing the work.
