Report: Soodh

Islamic Democratic Party leader Umar Naseer has said that the party would impose capital punishment for drug offenders if they win the next presidential election. He said that during his tenure as president, all locals and foreigners who are caught with proven evidence of using drugs would receive such a punishment.

Speaking to N. Velidhoo Community, Umar said that drugs were introduced to the country during the tenure of ruling DRP and the accused MDP senior members of using drugs. He said that DRP leader Gayoom has not given punishment for the drug offenders leading to an increase in such cases.

He said that only IDP has a better reputation to tackle the issue and that the party would enforce all measures to eradiate the social menace. He also said that this was not a call to gain additional votes, but it is a policy he intends to implement.

He said that the rights of criminals cannot override the rights of other individuals in the society. Therefore, anyone who violates the law will be given the punishment they deserve.

Umar also said that there will be severe punishment for rapists and sex offenders. He said that everyone will be equal under the law and that justice will be a priority. He said that there will be no room for a lawless democracy.

Further, he said that he is convinced that he could win the upcoming elections in 2008. He said that within a month of his election as president, social harmony will be reinstated.
