Zia Abbas was sentenced for 10 years on Sunday in absentia, for his alleged terror activities on 10th September 2003.
Court hearings were concluded in August, however, he was sentenced for ten years based on the evidences the court have and on his acceptance to the charges.
Five people in total, including Jenifer Latheef and Zia, were charged with terrorism in relation to the unrest in Male' 4 years ago. Maldivian Democratic Party has called on authorities to withdraw the charges filed against Zia.
After living in UK for three years, Zia returned to the country late last year. Zia has denied the charges saying that he signed since there was no option.
Jenifer Latheef was freed by a Presidential pardon less than ten months into her 10 year sentence.
