President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom yesterday called on the tourism sector to help increase the number of women involved in the industry. President Gayoom made this statement in his message on the occasion of World Tourism Day which was marked yesterday.

In his message, President stressed the importance of creating and increasing employment opportunities for Maldivians in the tourism sector and stated that the small percentage of women working in the industry currently highlights the need for increasing the participation of women in tourism.

Speaking on the theme “Tourism opens doors for women”, President Gayoom highlighted the relevance of this theme to the Maldives and called on the tourism industry to eliminate existing barriers that prevent women from joining the industry. He also noted that the elimination of such barriers was one of the objectives of the Third Tourism Master Plan.

Pointing out that Maldives would be celebrating 35 years of tourism on the 3rd of October this year, President stated that Maldives is currently one of the most popular tourist destinations, proved by the international awards and successes achieved by Maldivian resorts. President Gayoom stated that this was an opportune moment to strengthen our resolve to sustain the current popularity of Maldives as a desired tourist destination.
