Referendum related cases accepted by court

Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP has said that they have filed four cases of referendum irregularities have been submitted to Civil Court.

MDP says that in various stages of the August 18th public referendum to decide the governing pursuant system, many unacceptable activities were carried out, against the regulations that were passed out by the People's Special Majlis, regarding the referendum.

The party has reported that if those cases are successful, then the authorities should take immediate actions against the officials.

Two cases were filed against the Commissioner of Elections. The first was that the eligible voters list containing some of the deceased. Earlier, the Commissioner has said that it was the list obtained from the vital registration and statistics offices and that the Commission did scrutinize the list. The other case was related to discrepancy with the numbers of eligible voters.

According to MDP, the third case was filed against Minister of Atolls Development Ahmed Thasmeen Ali. The party has said that the allowances of island chiefs were raised prior to the election and that it might have influenced the election outcome.

The final case was filed against the Chief Judge of Civil Court Mujthaaz Fahmy. The party has filed a case for not giving sufficient time to submit complaints and cases to the people regarding the election irregularities, if there had been any. The time period to be given to the public was 30 days and was reduced to a week, according to MDP.

Earlier, Civil Court has accepted a case filed by Ali Sawad of S. Feydhoo.
