Report: Soodh
Maldives Ports Authority has reported that concerned officials from stakeholder authorities met yesterday to discuss on possible options to solve the jamming of unloading goods in the port.
Speaking to Miadhu, Assistant Managing Director Ahmed Thaufeeq said that they are very concerned over escalating prices of goods in the local market. Some traders have suggested that the prices were going up due to delays caused in unloading goods in the ports.
However, Ports Authority denied such claims and said that there was a time during the recent bad weather conditions that caused delays. Ports Authority reported that they have given priority to unload common goods that people would need to buy for Ramazan.
The prices still remains high. However, Mr. Thaufeeq said that officials met yesterday to find options to reduce traffic in the ports. He said that the officials have agreed to utilize Thilafushi and Hulhumale’ harbours to unload goods as it would help to reduce the traffic.
Officials from Maldives Customs Services, Ports Authority, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Trade attended the meeting. Officials discussed on ways to speed-up unloading of fruits and vegetables and other consumer goods to be given priority and ways to unload it without any delays.
Some of the goods brought for Ramazan were unloaded from ships yesterday and is expected to bring the prices lower than before.
