Shaviyani Atoll Special Majlis member Lubnaa Mohamed Zahir Hussain has said that the Civil Court should accept the election related cases from public members. Speaking to Miadhu, Lubnaa said that the regulation relating to secret ballots calls for the Court to accept any cases filed by people which they deemed unlawful.

She said that it was passed by the Special Majlis that any matter relating to the referendum which violates the rules can be directly filed to the Civil Court. However, the Civil Court has said that only cases filed through Elections Commission and People’s Special Majlis would be considered for actions.

“I don’t see any valid reason why the Court should not accept the cases filed by public members. It was decided by the Special Majlis that any matter relating to the election can be filed directly by any public member to the Court directly”, she said.

The proposal signed by 25 members of the Majlis calling to resolve the issue that arose during the national referendum taken on 18 August to determine the system of government to be adopted in the revised constitution was concluded in the Majlis without any concrete result. Also the debate over the eleven-member committee’s case was ended in the Majlis without any results.

Questioned what would happen regarding those, Lubnaa said that the Speaker would decide and inform the members about the future proceedings.

Kaafu Atoll member and the spokeswoman for the main opposition party MDP said that they are counting on the report of the Elections Commissioner and the report of the eleven-member committee in order to take any further actions.
