Democracy cannot be installed – Robert Evans

Democracy cannot be installed, but it can only be built upon, Robert Evans MEP has said. He said this while speaking at “21st century democracy”, a discussion held last night at Dharubaaruge organized by Open Society Association.

Talking about how Democracy developed in the world and about what we need to think about as Democracy is being introduced into the Maldives, he said that democracy cannot be installed and thus it has to be built from low.

Speaking about the factors we need to pay attention as Democracy is being introduced into Maldives, Robert said that we need a fair independent Judiciary which the people have trust in. He also said that we need a strong anti- corruption institution to counter corruption. We also need to build independent local institutions and most importantly, an independent, strong and fair Elections commission.

Roberts said that the people could get rid of the government if they are unsatisfied and noted that there have been changes in the governments in the 27 nations of the European parliament after democracy was introduced into them.

Speaking about the benefits of a democracy, Roberts said that we could tackle poverty, inequality etc when progressing. He concluded said that a Democracy won’t collapse and a Democracy is an urgent priority to the Maldives.

Last night’s meeting was welcomed and concluded by the Lead coordinator of Open Society Association Jessica Kate Griffiths and the introduction to the discussion was given by Mohamed Musthafa Hussain. An open discussion on democracy was held along with the floor opened for questions from the audience.
