Vice President to be elected along with President

People’s Special Majlis has passed to amend the constitution to reflect that name of the candidates competing for the Vice President should be announced along with the names of the candidates competing for the office of the President.

Clause (a) of the seventh article of the Bill on the President states that a Vice President should be elected to assist the President. Clause (b) of the same article says that a Presidential candidate should announce the name of a Vice President who would serve with him. Clause (c) of the same article says the prerequisites of a Vice President should be the same as that of the President. Further clause (d) says if for any reason the President is incapacitated, then Vice President should assume the office of the President.

Speaking at the Majlis, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee Ibrahim Ismail ( Ibra) said that when the necessary revisions are incorporated, a person voting during the presidential election will not only be voting for a president but also for a Vice President as well.

Ibra further noted that ballot paper used during the Presidential elections will contain the name of the Vise President near the name of the President.
