President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has welcomed two important developments at the session of the Special Majlis held on 14 of this month to finalize the Chapter on the President. This was revealed in press release issued by the Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) yesterday.
Firstly Special Majlis passed overwhelmingly to remove the gender bar for the Presidency and secondly the amendment passed which limits the term of office for the president for two 5 year terms.
The press release noted that the President Gayoom welcomed these endorsements by the Special Majlis and noted that these endorsements would give equal opportunities to all candidates from different political parties competing in the presidential elections.
The press release noted that these amendments were part of the amendments proposed by the President to Special Majlis. The Press Release also noted that the President viewed the two developments as two important achievements in the introduction of a modern democracy to the country.
