Literacy is essential to face challenges – Zaahiya

Minister of Education Zaahiya Zareer has said that becoming literate is an essential skill required to face the worldly challenges. In a message on the occasion of the international literacy day, the Minister said that success in all aspects of live is inter-related to literacy.

She said that whether in the fight against poverty and leading into a more descent life, fighting against diseases and during times of epidemics, during war times and in protecting environment, all these requires a special skill that can be achieved by becoming literate.

Mrs. Zaahiya also said that the key to achieve better health and a prosperous life is literacy. She said that information about healthy lifestyles, nutritious food, maternal and child health could only be better utilized, if the people are aware and literate. Therefore, she called upon everyone to put maximum efforts to learning.

She noted that the Maldives has achieved a special position in terms of the literacy rate nationwide. Hence, she said that it is important that we maintain the level of high standards that everyone aspires.

The Minister said that primary education is paramount and that we must ensure that all Maldivians complete the primary education. She called upon island committees, schools, parents and community organizations to join hands to take full responsibility to make sure that all our children are provided with sufficient education.
