Member calls for MP Ibra’s resignation

04 September 2007
Report: Soodh

Haa Dhaalu Member of the People’s Special Majlis Mr. Ahmed Aadhil has called for the resignation of Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) from his position as the chairman of the drafting committee.

Due to difficulties in retaining the required quorum and the resulting delays for amending the constitution, Addu Atoll member Husnu-Soodh proposed that the committee should be reduced to ten members instead of the 23 members. He said that based on the ten members who attend most of the meetings of the committee in the past could be a solution to solve the delays.

Haa Dhaal member Adhil also supported the proposal by Husnu-Soodh. However, Adhil said that since Ibra has declared that he would be running for the next presidential election in the Maldives, it would of the best interest that he resigns from the committee.

In yesterday’s meeting, Ibra also made suggestions for solving the committee’s progress. He said that the President of the Majlis must meet the members of the committee and must put an effort to make sure that all members attend the committee meetings. He also said that a majority ruling in the committee would also expedite the work.

Ibra said that with the current pace, it would be almost impossible to meet the deadline of completing the constitution by November 30. He also suggested that if nothing is progressing, the ultimate solution is that the present committee resigns and that a new committee takes over to do the drafting.
