Thaa Atoll MP for the People’s Special Majlis Riyaz Rasheed filed a civil suit against parliament speaker and Presidential appointee to the Special Majlis Ahmed Zahir for assault.
Riyaz's lawyer Husnu Suood said that Riyaz is seeking compensation from Zahir for allegedly trying to strangle him during yesterday’s sitting of the People’s Majlis.
Speaker Zahir yesterday denied that he had defamed Riyaz and said that MP was trying to spoil his dignity.
Zahir, in a statement said that at the time when the Majlis was heated, he put his hand on Riyaz's back and asked him to leave. However, Riyaz asked him not to touch him.
Riyaz’s witnesses for the case are the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party's Addu atoll MP Mohamed Aslam, Male' atoll MP Mariya Ahmed Didi, Baa atoll MP for Special Majlis Ali Faiz, South Ari atoll MP for Special Majlis Ilyas Hussain Ibrahim and Lhaviyani atoll member of parliament Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
