Resignation of ministers will not hamper reform

1 September 2007
Report: Faishan

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said resignations of three cabinet ministers in August will not hamper the reform programme and slow the speed of the development of the country. President said so in his monthly radio address broadcast last night on Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu. He said that with our strong determination we will continue to work relentlessly and never allow these efforts to hamper.

President Gayoom said the new road we are clearing for reform will increase our responsibility and perception to lead us to a path which will strengthen the principles of change through sound thinking. He said the new constitution in the present history would provide the basis for democratic principles. He noted that the People's Majlis has decided to complete the constitution by 30 November, and said he would extend all his support to this task.

Referring to the 18 August referendum, the President said patriotism and national unity must take precedence over difference of opinion.

Three key ministers who were closely associated with the reform programme have resigned from their posts last month. Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed and Justice Minister Mohamed Jameel resigned on 5 August while Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed resigned on 21 August.

This is the third in a series of radio talks President Gayoom has started to meet the people. He has asked the people to inform him what topics they want him to deal with in the radio talk.
