President Gayoom survives stab attempt

Confirmed reports are saying that there had been an attempt to stab President Gayoom in Haa Alif Hoarafushi, but the President survived the attempt without any injuries.

President was shaking hands with the people who had gathered to welcome him when a youth who was also there to shake hands with President attempted to stab President on the stomach. The attacker was hiding the knife inside a Maldivian National flag, Presidential Spokes Person Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) said.

A scout who was standing near the President obstructed the stab. The scout’s hand is severely cut, Mundu said.

Speaking to Velidhoonews Daily via phone just now, Mundhu questioned “Is this how those people who left the island recently (National Unity Movement) depose the President? By attacking him?”
