Report: Soodh
State Trading Organization, STO has reported that cement will be available from STO as early as next week. Following the rumors that STO has stopped importing cement, the company responded to a question posed by Velidhoo News, saying that the company has a priority to import and supply cement to the Maldivian market.
Though there are other companies supplying cement, there was a shortage of cement in the market following a reduction in cement supplies from STO.
People working in the construction industry informed about some of the difficulties they faced in the last couple of months and that prices also went high. Last week Lafaaj Company reported that there was a slow supply and shortage due to the unavailability of cement in the foreign market.
Reports say that the shortage of construction materials in the country was the huge increase on construction work and that there will be further difficulties if no special measures are arranged to address the issue.
There were unexpected construction works following the 2004 tsunami in many islands which also increased the demand for construction materials.
