Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party, DRP and Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP has accused each other for the delays in the amendment of the constitution. Doubts have been cast over meeting November 30 deadline to complete the constitution, which was agreed in the Special Majlis.

Spokesman of DRP Ibrahim Shafiu said that representatives of MDP in the Special Majlis are responsible for the delays. He said that MDP members’ actions and efforts to delay would not allow the Majlis to complete the work on time. He said that the chapters of the constitution can be finalized if members work for 48-hours. He also said that people can see the Majlis meetings on television and could judge the actions of MDP members to hinder the progress and strongly condemned their actions.

Shafiu also said that the focus of the Majlis has been diverted by MDP members by bringing in procedural points and points of order in the meetings. He also noted that MDP members were making personal attacks rather than debating on the issues.

However, Maldivian Democratic Party spokeswoman sees things differently. Maariya Ahmed Didi said that the Majlis has 113 members and the majority is DRP members and if they wish to complete the work, it can be completed in no time. She also said that many issue have been finalized in the Majlis by using the Majority power and therefore, she sees no reason to blame MDP members for the delays.

Shafiu said that DRP members are working to facilitate the completion of work by not raining points of order in the meetings and trying to maintain the focus of the Majlis. He said that the party will work towards meeting the deadline for amending the constitution.

Maariya Ahmed said that MDP will only defend issues that the drafting committee disagrees and will not hinder the progress of amending the constitution.

Only DRP has said that the deadline will be met and the constitution would be completed before November 30. All other parties have expressed their concern over the delay and have said that the constitution will not be completed before the deadline.
