He said that such acts clearly contravened all standards of social behaviour and that they could jeopardize societal harmony and endanger the public. He went on to note that such acts must be stopped.
The President also noted that there was an orchestrated campaign to bring the Maldives to disrepute in the eyes of the international community. He said that such actions could jeopardize tourism in this country and disrupt economic and social services in the country.
President Gayoom also highlighted in his address on the rights of children and recent reports of cases of abuse against children. He emphasized that we, as a society, should be ashamed that such incidents were happening in the Maldives.
He said that the issue warranted the attention of all the people, and that a speedy solution must be found on a nationwide scale. He added that the government was reviewing additional measures that could be implemented in all avenues to stop such horrendous acts, including stronger action that could be adopted through the criminal justice system against perpetrators of child abuse.
