HRC concerned over increasing crimes

Human Rights Commission has express great concern over the increasing crimes in Maldivian society. In a press release, HRC stated that due to the increasing number of crimes, peace and harmony in the country is affected.

Further it stated that the increasing number of societal crimes have left many with huge losses and psychologically affected. The statement therefore, strongly condemned the actions done by a few that violate the rights of many.

Human Rights Commission was also concerned that Police Officers are being targeted by some groups and said that incidences like the recent incident where two police officers being attacked and requiring treatment abroad should be stopped immediately.

It also said that police officers are doing a good job in maintaining peace and security within the islands and they should be protected and respected. The Commission also stated that in the same manner police should also respect the right of anyone arrested and taken into custody.

Highlighting the international covenants signed by the country, the Commission noted the importance of making sure that all rights of people are protected and strict measures taken against people violating the rights.

The Commission called on authorities to make sure that criminals are given penalties according to the crimes they have committed and also to provide rehabilitation while serving the sentences.

It also called on concerned authorities to enforce the regulations to reduce crimes within the society to maintain peace and order.
