Maldives Police Service has foiled the protest organized by Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP in nearly 30-minutes. MDP members organized the protest saying that the results of the vote taken on August 18 referendum was invalid.

Earlier Ministry of Home Affairs had broadcast nation-wide notices and announcements saying that the planned gathering by MDP was illegal as the party has not given a week’s notice nor submitted a request for permission for such a gathering.

Nearly 200 activists from MDP took part in the protest that started 1630 hrs yesterday evening. Though it did not last long, senior MDP officials also took part in the rally. Reports say that 6 people were arrested for their disobedience.

Later in the night, some activists also attempted to continue the protest near Mercury Light Hotel. Those gathered in the area called for the resignation of senior government officials including the President.

Another nine activists were arrested near Mercury Light area. This includes GoGo Latheef, who was the founder of MDP. However, he was released later in the night. Some activists threw shattered glasses towards police officers.

Bystanders near the area were unhappy over the actions of some of the activists. They expressed their dissatisfaction over the way protestors handled the situation while others blamed the police for the way they handled the situation.

The Home Ministry earlier warned saying that strict action would be taken against people who violate the regulation of freedom of assembly. A resolution for a series of protests was passed by the MDP national council after debating numerous irregularities that the party considered has pertained in relation to the referendum on the system of government for Maldives.

The presidential system of government was voted in the referendum in which only MDP promoted and campaigned for a parliamentary system of government.
