Ministry of Education has revealed that the reason why the Ministry is employing foreign teachers is because not enough local teachers are available.
Deputy Minister of Education Ibrahim Ismail said although there are qualified Maldivian teachers, the number still not enough to teach all the subjects in all the grades. He further said the Ministry is providing training to local teachers in the Faculty. However Deputy Minister noted that local teachers when trained refuse to accept positions in schools other than the school of their choice. Deputy Minister revealed that in order to fill those vacant positions, Ministry is forced to employ foreign teachers.
“This year we expected around 300 local teachers would join us, however, I note with regret, these local teachers would refuse to take up positions in schools other than the school of their choice, most of the graduates from the faculty want positions in Male’, this means all the schools in Male would be filled up, we have many vacant positions in Atolls, in actual fact we want Maldivian, trained Maldivian and if they are willing to take up positions in schools where we want, then we immediately employ them, we have many requirements in atolls” said Deputy Minister Ibrahim Ismail.
