The Cabinet yesterday gave recommendation to President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom that Maldives should attain membership of the “Codex Alimentarius Commission”.

The recommendation was presented at yesterday’s meeting of the Cabinet, after deliberating on a paper presented by the Ministry of Health.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission was established in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), to develop food standards, guidelines and related texts. The main purposes of the Commission include protecting the health of consumers and ensuring fair practices in the international food trade.
