Arrests made in Dhihdhoo due to attempted unrest: Police

Maldives Police Service has said that some people were arrested in Dhihdhoo as they attempted to create unrest. On reports that 7 people were arrested in Dhihdhoo last week, Miadhu Daily contacted Police and they said that 6 people were arrested, but refused to give any further details. Police official said that they were arrested as they didn’t listen to the advice and attempted to create unrest.

Miadhu Daily correspondent at Dhihdhoo was the first person to report this news, saying that arrests were made as they voiced against President Gayoom’s visit to Dhihdhoo and all of them were youth.

Maldivian Democratic Party yesterday condemning the act of Police in a Press release said that among those arrested were members of that party and that included 3 members of island development committee recently elected.

MDP Press release said that 300 police men went to the island with weapons and arrested the people elected by the people when they expressed their view about the President’s visit to Dhihdhoo and these 3 people arrested were Faruhaad Abdullah, Abdullah Waheed and Ubaidullah Saeed from the Island development committee of Dhihdhoo.

Atolls Ministry said that they knew nothing about the arrests and we were unable to contact MDP Haa Alif atoll branch president Ahmed Abdullah.
