Maldivian Govt. will work to preserve Islam in our society: President

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom yesterday said that the current Maldivian Government will work to preserve Islam in our society.

President Gayoom noted that the Government attaches a high priority to protecting our Islamic beliefs, and that this was one of the most important tasks he had been working on since he came to office.

President emphasized that maintaining peace within our society should be given special attention now because of the ongoing Democratic Reform Agenda, and that it should not be used as an excuse to cause discord among our people.

President Gayoom noted that the people of Ihavandhoo are hard working and diligent, and that they had achieved remarkable progress in the field of education. He then emphasized the importance of educating the youth and said that all parents must make sure their children grow up to be good and well-disciplined citizens.

Speaking at a ceremony held in the Ihavandhoo School, Island Chief, Mohamed Ibrahim noted that Ihavandhoo is the third most populated island of the atoll. He also highlighted the progress the island had achieved since the President took into office.

President was welcomed warmly upon his arrival by the officials of the island, members of different committees, and a large number of people from the general public. Upon his arrival, the people of Ihavandhoo presented the President with a song performed by Ihavandhoo Club, Pole Star. President Gayoomwas welcomed at the Ihavandhoo School with a performance by the students of the school.
