President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has survived unhurt from an attempt to stab him yesterday morning at Haa Alif Hoarafushi. While the President was shaking hands with the people gathered to welcome him, a man among the large crowd who was hiding a knife inside a National flag attempted to stab the President on the stomach, but a scout of 15 years intervened.
Speaking with the people of Hoarafushi, the President said that he was grateful to Almighty Allah for saving him. He thanked Mohamed Jaisham Ibrahim, the boy Scout of Hoarafushi who saw the assailant’s attempt and successfully deflected the attack. He also thanked the boy’s family, wished Jaisham a speedy and full recovery, expressing sadness over the fact that the boy suffered serious injuries.
The President said that this incident did not at all deter his will and that he would still continue to serve the people of Maldives.
In his speech, the President admonished those behind the attack, saying that all such attempts to disrupt the peace of our country would not succeed and that their objectives cannot be achieved. The President said that we should not attack one another and try to kill them even though there are differences in opinion. Speaking on this behalf, the President said that “Political parties also have to be mature than that”
The President thanked the people of Hoarafushi for their warm reception and said that the wordings on their welcome banners gave him much encouragement.
The president’s office reported that the Island chief of Haa Alif Hoarafushi, speaking at a ceremony held in the Haa Alif Atoll School, said that the people of the island condemned the attack. According to the President’s office, he said that the people of Hoarafushi were very loyal to the Maldivian Government.
The news of the incident was carried on world media outlets such as CNN, BBC, Reuters and AFP etc with strong condemnation.
