Foreign Minister condemns stab attempt

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has strongly condemned the attempt to stab the President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in Hoarafushi yesterday morning. Commenting on the incident, Shahid called the attack “unacceptable and abhorrent to all decent people”. He also noted that “violence has never and will never be an effective or justifiable means of resolving disputes or differences of opinion”. Minister Shahid said that such acts are alien to Maldivian culture who prize tolerance and understanding above all other values.

Minister Shahid praised the brave scout who intervened to protect the President and said “while the action of the attacker was driven by hate and disregard for the lives of others; the young scout who so bravely intervened to save our President demonstrated, through his actions, bravery, selflessness and concern for the well being of others. Shahid also said that “these are the true values upon which Maldives society is based, and must continue to be based”.

Finally, the Minister urged all stakeholders in the Maldives to reject violence and confrontation and to work together towards a better Maldives.

“This attack also goes against the very principles upon which all of us in Maldives are trying to build a better future within the framework of the Reform Agenda” said the Minister.

“The new Maldives that will be ushered in, following the completion of the Agenda will be built upon freedom, cooperation, understanding, and protection of human rights and respect for laws and values of the country” said Foreign Minister Shahid.
