President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom thanked the Close Protection Team (CPT) of Maldives National Defence Force for their skill and quick action in saving him from yesterday’s attack on his life at Hoarafush.
Speaking with the people of North Thiladhunmathi Atoll Baarah, the President noted that the Close Protection Team was highly trained and skilled to control such incidents. He then highlighted the role played by the team in protecting him from yesterday’s assault.
President Gayoom noted that the number of cases of violence were on the rise, and condemned last night’s attack on Addu Atoll MP, Ibrahim Shareef. He said that we should not allow discord to pervade our society and that such incidents could only be stopped by the collaborative effort of all the citizens.
He further said that such incidents do not occur in the truly developed and civilized countries, although they also have their share of conflicts and disagreements. He advised the people not to resort to violence, and try to resolve any disputes peacefully.
In his speech, the President noted that Baarah is significant historically, and called on the officials of the island and members of committees to co-operate with the Government in the fight against narcotic drugs.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Baarah School, the Island Chief, Ahmed Yoosuf praised President Gayoom for the remarkable progress Maldives has achieved under his rule.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Atoll Chief of North Thiladhunmathi Atoll, Mohamed Rasheed, highlighted the importance the President gives to the development of the atolls and said that active co-operation of the citizens were vital for sustainable development.
President Gayoom was greeted upon his arrival in Baarah by the officials of the island, members of different committees and members of the general public. “Zuvaanunge Dhirun”, a society of Baarah presented two items to welcome the President.
President Gayoom arrived in Male’ yesterday afternoon after concluding his visit to North Maalhosmadulu Alifushi, South Thiladhunmathi Hanimadhoo and some islands of North Thiladunmathi Atoll. A large number of people were gathered at the jetty to welcome him and express support for the President since he escaped unharmed from the attempt on his life in Hoarafushi.
President Gayoom also visited Mohamed Jaisham Ibrahim, who was injured in the attack. He is currently being treated at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. He wished Jaisham a full and speedy recovery and expressed sympathy to the family.
