Report: Ayya
A Majlis session has been scheduled for next Sunday to hold discussions on the Bill on President ahead of debate on Bill on Transitional Government as petitioned by Special Majlis Members of DRP.
Speaking on TVM Speaker of the Special Majlis Qasim Ibrahim said that Majlis sessions were interrupted due to disagreements amongst Members on the issue of transitional government. While the opposition parties has petitioned the Majlis to delay debate on the President’s Bill till the debate on Bill on Transitional government is completed, Majlis session is scheduled to work on the Bill on the President and the Annexes as has been previously scheduled.
Unofficial meeting organized by Speaker Qasim Ibrahim aimed at consolidating member opinions last Thursday proved futile.
Speaking to Miadhu, Maria Ahmed Didi, MP for Male’ Atoll as well as Chief Spokesperson of MDP said that she would like to confirm whether the constitutional reform process currently being carried out by the Special Majlis is in fact, compiling a new constitution or otherwise. She said that she would like to confirm this as ahead of debate on the Bill on the President as many Members supporting DRP are claiming to that effect.
“We have submitted an petition under article 14, the petition by 25 members states that we like to proceed with the initial debate on the transitional government, we have so far not talked about any transitional government, so we are proposing to proceed with the debate so that Drafting Committee may continue their work” said Maria.
Earlier Speaker Qasim referring to the petition of MDP has said that as the work of the constitutional reform is being carried as per preset time table, he would need the advice of the Administrative Committee to reach a decision. The meeting of the Administrative Committee was adjourned due to Members differences. As such Administrative Committee was incapable of providing any advice to the Speaker on the issue.
