Inaugural meetings of IDC held

Ministry of Atoll Administration has revealed that Island Development Committees (IDC), except for one island, has been elected and that the inaugural meeting of the Committees has been held.

Ministry revealed that the elections were held in a peaceful and orderly environment and that no unrest and disturbances were caused as result of these elections.
Ministry further revealed that the only island where the IDC has not been elected as yet is Maavaidhoo of Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Ministry also informed that members to IDC is some islands were elected on the second attempt and that the problem with the IDC in Maavaidhoo was that even on the second time, number of candidates wishing to become members of the Committee were less than the number required to set up the committee.

“As opposed to other years, this year the committees were elected by the people, in previous years the committee comprises of the in charge of the island office, president of the women’s development committee and other members were appointed by the Atoll Chief “revealed the Ministry.

According to Director Javad the main objective of the Committee is to strengthen the administration of the government office and to provide consultancy on administrative issues.

“Under no circumstances an IDC can order any government agency to act in a particular manner, IDCs are not mandated for that, their only role is in an advisory capacity” said Mohamed Javad Yousuf Director at the Atolls Ministry.
