63 arrested in Himandhoo clashes

Maldives Police Services have revealed that a total of 63 people have been arrested in the special operation conducted in Himandhoo. In this connection 30 people have been sent to the detention center in Dhoonidhoo and the remaining 33 will be dispatched soon.

The operation conducted in search of the 2 fugitives wanted in the Sultan Park explosion led to violent clashes with a radical religious group in that island. The clashes led to severe injuries to 15 defense force officers 19 police officers and to a number of people from the radical religious group.

While 6 police officers have been sent abroad for emergency medical treatment, 3 Maldives Defense Force officers are being treated in Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

The special operation conducted by Maldives Police Services MPS and Maldives National Defense Force MNDF in Himandhoo came to end yesterday morning when the breakaway radical religious group surrendered to the joint commandoes without any conditions.
