An Act of Law is essential to Police Services

8 October 2007
Report: Soodh

An Act of Law passed by the Parliament stipulating the privileges and responsibilities of a policeman would greatly enhance the quality of service provided by Maldives Police Services says Assistant Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz. He made the statement at a press briefing held at their headquarters on 6 October 2007.

“one of the things that we need today is an Act of Law, an Act of law on police is essential to discharging the responsibility of a policemen especially in situations like these where terrorism is involved, in such cases police are entrusted with more powers as is the case in other countries “said Riyaz.

Assistant Commissioner Riyaz further says that they prefer to perform services that are stipulated in a Police Act. The absence of such an Act is seen as obstacle to fully discharging their responsibilities.

He went on to say that he hoped that such an Act where the powers of the police are fully described would soon be passed by the parliament.

The draft of the Act on Police services has been forwarded to Parliament sometime ago.
