Islamic faith is a precious national asset – President Gayoom

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that Islamic faith is a precious national asset of the Maldives. He made the statement yesterday night in his lecture at the final meeting of this year’s program to revive and renew the spirit of the holy month of Ramazan.

In his lecture, President called on the people to safeguard the country’s moderate Islamic faith and warned that the failure to do so would cast a huge shadow on the county’s future prosperity.

President said that, through out history, Maldivians were a model of unity and solidarity. He said that, lately, these social bonds were being weakened, and that it had lead to numerous unsavory incidents. He added that these chinks in the country’s armor had lead to the horrific incident that took place in Male’ on 29th September.

President Gayoom said that the Ramadan was a month of caring. He noted that committing acts that endangered the lives of innocent people during the holy month was an unspeakable sin in Islam. Quoting verses from the noble Quran, President emphasized that it was incumbent upon every Muslim to treat non-Muslims with respect and to uphold their rights.

In his lecture, President noted that the holy month of Ramadan taught many valuable lessons, including the promotion of unity and solidarity and consolidating ties with Islamic Ummah.

In the vote of thanks, President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim , thanked President Gayoom for his strong support and valuable assistance in ensuring the success of the program. Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim thanked the foreign scholars who participated in this year’s program as well as to all those who had assisted the program.
