MHRC holds talks with Adhaalath and Supreme Council

Report: Uken

Maldives Human Rights Commission, MHRC, has held separate meetings with the Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs and Adhaalath Party on the issues resulting from differences in religious opinion.

The meetings were held as MHRC believes that these differences in religious opinion are resulting in divisions within the communities and are disrupting the harmony and peaceful coexistence that Maldives had always enjoyed.

At the meeting, discussions were held aimed at finding amicable solutions to the increasing issues of religious extremism.

During the discussions held Adhaalath Party and the Supreme Council said that divisions within the communities as a result of Islamic radical thinking did not originate recently and that failure by the concerned authorities to implement adequate measures had led to the present status quo.

The discussions highlighted the fact that disintegration of religious unity is a sad state of affairs; it is the consequence of lack of foresight in implementation of corrective steps. Two important steps that can be used in the fight against Islamic extremism were agreed upon. They are, providing the correct religious information and enforcing the Law when required. It was also noted that improper use of force might further aggravate the situation.

Human Rights Commission says that it is the responsibility of the government not to violate the detainee’s basic rights and to treat them in accordance with the Law. The Commission also called on the concerned authorities to expedite the investigation process.

HRC also noted the importance in making the Supreme Council an independent Council.
