President takes steps to fight Islamic extremists

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President of Maldives, speaking to AFP French News Agency on 21 of this month has said that he has started implementing measures to prevent foreign terror organizations from establishing their cells in the country.

He made the comments while talking about militant Islamic groups in the country who preaches an extreme form of Islam which are causing unrest within the communities.
President said “these unrests could allow international terror groups to capitalize and set up cells in the country”.

He said he has evidence that these militants are receiving funds from abroad.”We have taken enough measures to deal with the problem, we take it very seriously” said President Gayoom.

President Gayoom in his interview with AFP notes that Maldives was sharing intelligence with neighboring countries India and Sri Lanka as well as with countries like US and UK.

President said Islamic extremism had begun to affect the country and its image as liberal Islamic society.

President noted that these extreme militants were not good for the image of the country. “We have been a liberal country for centuries” said the President.

We want to be known as very peaceful country with political and social stability; we are determined to preserve that image says President Gayoom.

Maldives depend on its Tourism for much its foreign currency. Maldives is one world’s best holiday destinations with high end hotels offering rooms well over US $ 2000 per night.
