The Chief Spokesperson of Adhaalath Party Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has called on the people to disregard any decree that may be issued by the government that bans wearing of head to toe covering of women in public places. He made the call while speaking at a special gathering of Adhaalath Party held at Dharubaaruge on 18 October 2007.

Shaheem said Maldives is a 100% Muslim state, one of the two in the world, a member of the Organization of Islamic Countries, and a member of Rabitha. He further noted that the President of Maldives is a renowned scholar from Azhar University and said for of these reasons we should be ashamed to ban wearing of full buruga, head to toe covering, for our Muslim women who wishes to dress in that manner.

“Even in countries like America, UK, and India, Muslim women have the opportunity to dress in that manner if they so desire” says Shaheem.

Chief Spokesperson Shaheem said that Adhaalath is trying to persuade the government not to issue such a decree.

He said that Adhaalath would support the government, police and the Defense forces in the protection of the country from religious extremists.
