Visit was to discuss role to be played in reform process – Dr. Hassan Saeed

The purpose of the visit to UK is find out which role would best suit Open Society in the reform process that is going on in Maldives and to hold discussions with foreign agencies on the subject said Dr. Hassan Saeed. He made the statement to Velidhoo News immediately after returning to Male’ from his UK visit.

Open Society is an NGO led by ex Foreign Minister Dr.Ahmed Shaheed, ex Justice Minister Mohamed Jameed and ex Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed. The ministers resigned from government last August stating that government was obstructing their reform work.

Speaking to Velidhoo News Dr. Hassan Saeed said that their visit to UK was to discuss the role that Open Society can play in the reform process of Maldives with foreign agencies. In this regard discussions were held with Senior Officials of the European Parliament designated to this region and with Senior Officials of the Foreign Ministry of UK. He further noted that his team also met and held discussions with Members of the British Parliament.

“The main aim of the visit is discuss the role Open Society can play in the reform process of Maldives, and in this regard we met and held discussions with Senior Officials of the European Parliament designated to this region, we met with Senior Officials of the Foreign Office of UK, Senior Members of the Commonwealth and members of the British Parliament” said Dr. Hassan Saeed who resigned from the last August citing government obstruction to his reform work.

When asked to comment on his recent interview to The Independent, a tabloid published in UK, which stated that he would stand in the coming presidential elections Dr. Hassan Saeed, cut short the conversation saying he would comment on it later.

Many believe that Dr. Hassan Saeed is a leading contender for the presidency.
