Development policies are geared to achieve MDG - Shahid

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has said that Maldives developmental policy has been geared to achieve the millennium developmental goals, MDG, outlined by United Nations. He made the statement speaking at the ceremony held to mark the 62 anniversary of United Nations at the UN Building in Male’.

Speaking at the ceremony Minister Shahid said that Maldives gives high priority to achieve the goals agreed by world organizations and countries in improving the quality of life. He noted that Maldives have achieved the goals targeted in some area of MDG. Considerable strides have been made in eliminating the differences in the standard of education provided between girls and boys, especially at secondary level; in reducing the infant mortality rate and improving the health of young mothers. He further stated in some areas Maldives requires assistance of UN in overcoming the challenges faced in achieving the targets.

Minister Shahid noted that national development cannot be achieved without protecting human rights. In order to maintain sustainable development each and every member of the community must be afforded the opportunity to participate in the development of the nation said the Minister.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid thanked the UN for the assistance rendered in advancing the Human Rights in the country. In this regard he noted that the services of the Human Rights Expert of the UN High Commissioner’s Office.

Minister Shahid thanked the staff of UN for their efforts in achieving the millennium goals.
