Party involvement will create more harmony – Dr. Shaheed

15 October 2007

Dr. Ahmed Shaheed former Foreign Minister who resigned from the cabinet last August has said that if the major political parties in the country are given the opportunity to participate in the management of the country, then it would be easier to reach a safe destination.

Answering a question from Velidhoo News on the issues of religious extremism that is creeping in to our society, the surge of recent violence in various parts of the country and its effect on our image as perceived by other countries, Dr. Shaheed said that it would affect our image as viewed by other countries and if left unchecked it can have serious consequences. In addition he noted that if major political parties like MDP, DRP and Adaalath are given the opportunity to participate in the management of the country then it would be easier to reach a safe destination.

“Our image as seen by other countries would be changed; actually they have been talking about this for some time now, if you would remember, earlier this year in May or June , there is an article written in Sloan magazine of America, the author of the article had visited Himandhoo as well, he had written to say that religious extremist group are present in Maldives; at a time when they were expressing their concern, the blast of September 29, shocked them all, if we were to ignore it then it would be very sad , the government must take action to stop this type of religious thought” said former Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed.

Dr. Shaheed said that acts of terror carried out in the name religion by extremists group are of serious concern to all world leaders and that the issue religious extremism is an issue more difficult to handle than problems related to terrorism.

Dr. Shaheed noted that the education system needs to be reshaped. Our youth must be taught to use a broader thinking with religious issues.

Former Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed called on the people to be united, to work with the government to solve these issues. He said this is not a problem faced by the government only. This is a challenge faced by the business community as well as the entire nation and instead of blaming and finger pointing at certain group or groups we must all unite and work together to solve these issues.
