President Maumoon is the past – Dr. Hassan Saeed

20 October 2007
Report: Soodh

Former Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed has said that the biggest success of a person who has been in power for 30 is to pass the reins smoothly and peacefully to the next generation.

He said this while speaking to Velidhoo News and added that he fully agrees with the call of European Union.

“President Maumoon has repeatedly said that he wants the Reform Agenda proposed by him to be his legacy, it can only be a legacy once the person who introduced it passes it on to another person, the biggest success of a person who has being in power for 30 years would be to pass the reins of the country to another generation peacefully and smoothly, that is a big responsibility” says Dr. Hassan Saeed.

Dr.Hassan Saeed who resigned from the government last August stating that Reform Agenda has failed, said that “even the Reform Agenda talks about 2 terms in office, under the presidential system a president can stay in office for 2 terms”. He added that President Maumoon is the past not the future.

Answering a question from Velidhoo News whether Dr. Hasan Saeed foresees the possibility of a power shift, he replied currently parties are mostly involved with an individual and nearly all institutions in Maldives are one man shows. Political parties in Maldives have two or three as leaders and the whole party’s future is shaped based on their actions said Hassan Saeed.
