Miadhu has learnt that Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed has been arrested and taken to Dhoonidhoo detention centre. A person who wishes to remain anonymous told Velidhoo that Sheikh Fareed was arrested on 11 October.
To verify the story Velidhoo contacted Media Official of Maldives Police who said that Sheikh Fareed was arrested with regard to an issue under the law on protection of religious unity and is now in police custody for questioning. Media Officer declined to give information on where he was arrested or where he is being detained. Media Officer said that he cannot provide any further details at this point in time.
Sheikh Fareed was also arrested on 22 January this year. He was arrested then, as he came out of Ibrahimy Mosque after Isha prayers. According to information received, the Sheikh then was arrested, in connection with the rally that was organized by Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP, in November last year.
Sheikh Fareed resigned from MDP in March this year saying that MDP’s policy was being shaped against the principles of Islam. He was the Vice President of the Council on Religious Scholars of MDP.
