Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party MDP Mohamed Nasheed, Anni, has said that the change of People’s Association, PA, to a political party would mean that DRP, Dhivehi Raiyyithuge Party, would loose substantial support which they otherwise enjoyed.

Anni made the statement while speaking to Velidhoo News regarding talks spreading in town that MDP may loose the position of main opposition with the transformation of PA
“Even with the transformation of PA to a political party, MDP will still be the main opposition party; DRP will face huge losses and the change will even affect their presidential campaign” said Anni, Chairperson of MDP.

Anni explained that “PA was formed within DRP, they had their support within DRP; I simply don’t how PA can get any support within MDP considering their past and their policies”.

Velidhoo News contacted Chief Spokesperson of DRP Ibrahim Shafiu for a comment. He said that the thinking of DRP and PA is very different and PA members have their own agenda. He further commented that the change would have some effect.

“There are some leading parliamentary members in PA; even if they change to party or not we can see that PA have their own agenda; they don’t think in same lines as DRP does; it would be big loss if we don’t get their cooperation in the constitutional reform process that is going on, then it is going to have some effect” said Shafiu.

Shafiu further noted that there is no appreciable change in their membership as yet.
The change of PA to a political party would bring more competitiveness to the political arena. In an interview given to Velidhoo News PA’s Leader and the founder of the Association Abdulla Yamin said the Association would soon change to a political party.
