Professor Dr. Mohamed Hashimi Kamaali who has been assigned to provide technical assistance to the Drafting Committee of the People’s Special Majlis has said that there is no Article in the Draft of the Constitution that contradicts the principles of Islam.
Professor Kamaali made the statement speaking at a press conference held at the office of the Drafting Committee at Velaanage.
Briefing the media on the work he carried out in the Drafting Committee he said draft Constitution was compiled to reflect the principles of Islam and that no Article in the Draft contradict any Islamic principle.
Professor Kamaali said that a good constitution is based on establishing a fair and just judicial system, on protecting the rights of the people. He said that all these aspects are reflected in the Draft.
Professor Kamaali who is an expert of Islamic sharia said that the Draft protects the Islamic religion and that he is very satisfied with it.
Speaking at the press briefing Professor said that many members of the Special Majlis raised their concerns to him on the right of freedom of speech, the right of conscience and the right to engage in activities that is not prohibited under the Constitution, as stated in the Draft, does not conflict with Islamic principles. He further said all these are encouraged in Islam and within the boundaries of Islam.
He also said that as the second Article of the first chapter of Draft Constitution stipulates Islam as state religion, every article in the constitution does not have to specify Islamic sharia as the second Article of the first chapter gives support to the fact.
Professor said that he clarified members queries regarding these issues and that detailed report would be submitted soon.
